Education has played a big role in Common’s life and through our partnership with AdoptAClassroom.org, we recently caught up with award-winning musical artist and actor, Common, when we celebrated our inaugural in-store fundraising campaign by adopting The Renaissance School of the Arts in East Harlem, NY. Read on to learn more about Common and his commitment to education and the campaign.

Why is education so important to you?

Growing up, I watched how my mother cared for her students and how hard she worked both as an educator and outside of the classroom. I realized very early just how important it is to have an adult in your corner, and for many kids that adult is often a teacher.

How else have you supported education in the past?

I started the Common Ground Foundation to empower high school students to become future leaders. We provide mentoring and college readiness programs for students from underserved communities in Chicago. In our programs we encourage students to set a goal for their high school and college careers and we support the path they set for themselves. We believe that every child has the opportunity to succeed given the proper resources.

What role has education played in advancing your career?

Education has been the foundation for advancing my career. It has been the ground on which I stand to do and apply everything I've learned not only academically, but also spiritually, professionally, creatively, and in developing business relationships. Anything is possible if one has a solid foundation and are afforded the opportunity to learn and grow.

Both Math and English.

Do you have a teacher who you feel really impacted your life?

My math teacher, Mr. Brown, was fun, intelligent, and set a great example for what we should be as young black children. He always reinforced integrity, character and being at your best.
